How final drive, slewing ring and swing drive work together
An excavator has two drive paths. The final drive sits on the undercarriage: a hydraulic motor drives the sprocket via a planetary gearbox and thus moves the track. Each track side has its own final drive.
The slewing ring and swing drive handle the rotation of the superstructure. The slewing ring carries the superstructure and has a toothed ring that the swing drive pinion engages with. If one of the two wears, the other usually suffers too. That is why we check the pinion and the teeth together when there is play in the slewing system.
Typical signs of a fault
- Final drive: machine pulls to one side, loses power on slopes, oil on the gearbox cover.
- Slewing ring: play or clicking when slewing, uneven rotation.
- Swing drive: superstructure turns slowly or jerks, noises from the swing gearbox.

Questions about drives for construction machines
- What is the difference between a final drive and a swing drive?
- The final drive moves the machine: it sits on the undercarriage and drives the track via the drive sprocket. The swing drive turns the superstructure: its pinion engages with the teeth of the slewing ring.
- What information do you need for a drive part?
- Make and model of the machine, ideally with the serial number from the type plate. The part number from the old part is even more precise. For a slewing ring the dimensions will do if necessary, for a final drive a photo of the motor's type plate.
- Which machines are drives available for?
- For mini excavators, crawler excavators, wheeled excavators, wheel loaders, cranes and material handlers. Most parts in the drives area are final drives for mini excavators.
- Are final drives also available at finaldrive.de?
- Yes. finaldrive.de is the specialist site of GAM Baumaschinenteile GmbH dedicated to final drives only. The contacts and warehouse are the same.
