Measuring a slewing ring: four dimensions are enough
Without a part number, we identify the slewing ring from the dimensions on the removed part or on the machine.
- A Outside diameter across the outer ring
- B Inside diameter, with internal gearing measured across the tooth tips
- C Number of teeth and position of the gearing, internal or external
- D Number and diameter of the holes in the outer and inner ring
Buying a slewing ring: what matters
What a slewing ring is
The slewing ring, also called a slewing bearing or ball slewing ring, is a large rolling bearing between the upper and lower carriage. It carries the entire weight of the upper carriage and absorbs the tilting moments when digging and lifting. Depending on the design, the gearing is internal or external.
Slewing rings for excavators, mini excavators or cranes
The catalogue assigns every slewing ring to a machine model. Sizes range from mini excavators to crawler excavators: the slewing ring for the Liebherr R926 LC weighs 236 or 260 kg depending on the version. The same applies to excavators, cranes and material handlers: manufacturers often fit several versions to one model, so we clarify the version before we quote.
Slewing ring with drive
The slewing ring is turned by the swing drive, whose pinion meshes with the gearing. If the gearing is worn, we check the pinion at the same time. Matching swing drives and final drives for the same machines can be found in the drive systems section.

Questions about slewing rings
- Which dimensions do I need to identify a slewing ring?
- Outside diameter, inside diameter, number of teeth and position of the gearing (internal or external), plus the number and diameter of the holes in the outer and inner ring. With the part number or the machine's serial number it is quicker.
- Why are there several slewing rings for one excavator model?
- Manufacturers change the hole pattern and diameter during the production period. For the Liebherr R926 LC, for example, there are two versions with an outside diameter of 1310 mm and 1285 mm.
- What is a slewing ring?
- A slewing ring, also called a slewing bearing or ball slewing ring, is a large rolling bearing between the upper and lower carriage. It carries the weight of the upper carriage and absorbs tilting moments. The swing drive turns the upper carriage via its gearing.
- How can I tell that the slewing ring is worn?
- By play between the upper and lower carriage, by cracking or jerking when slewing and by uneven rotation. It is worth replacing it before the damaged gearing also destroys the pinion of the swing drive.
- What do I need to check before installation?
- Check the mounting surfaces on the upper and lower carriage for flatness deviation. If the deviation is too large, the slewing ring deforms when the bolts are tightened and no longer turns smoothly.
- How is a new slewing ring lubricated?
- Press grease into each grease nipple in turn while rotating the slewing ring until a continuous collar of fresh grease emerges under the seals. How often it needs regreasing depends on the application and environment. It is important that the old grease can escape freely.
- Why should I measure the tilting clearance after installation?
- The clearance increases as the raceway wears. A baseline value, measured in the installed condition before the first start-up, later shows how far the slewing ring has worn. How to measure and which limit values apply is described in the document "Checking the tilting clearance" supplied with the slewing ring.
