Two numbers, two purposes
The machine serial number is on the type plate and determines the version: manufacturers change parts during the production run without changing the model name. The part number is on the part itself or in the parts list and identifies exactly one part.
A part often has several numbers: the machine manufacturer's number and the part manufacturer's type designation. For the hydraulic pump for the Kubota KX41, for example, RG118-61110 and PVD-00B-14P-5AG-4749A refer to the same part. Both help with identification.
Where the machine type plate is located
On excavators and mini excavators the type plate is usually on the upper carriage, often near the cab or on the frame. It shows the model, serial number and year of manufacture. A photo of it is all we need.
Where the number is on the part
- Hydraulic pump: on a plate on the pump housing, often with a stamped type designation as well.
- Final drive and swing drive: on a plate or stamped on the gearbox or the hydraulic motor.
- Slewing ring: usually stamped on the outer or inner ring.
- Engine: on the type plate, often on the valve cover or on the side of the engine block. More in the guide Isuzu engine: finding the serial number and engine code.
- Rubber track: no part number, but the size instead, see Measuring a rubber track.
Plates and stampings are often hidden under dirt and oil. Clean the area carefully before taking a photo.
No number legible? This will help
- manufacturer, model and serial number of the machine
- photos of the part from several angles
- dimensions of the removed part, for a slewing ring for example diameter, number of teeth and bolt pattern
- the number from the machine's parts list, if available
With these details we can narrow down the part in many cases even without a part number. In the spare parts search you can search by model or part number yourself.
